"Man is a Religious Animal. He is the only Religious Animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion - several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself and cuts his throat if his theology isn't straight." -- Mark Twain

"The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common: They never alter their beliefs to meet the facts. They alter their facts to meet their views. Which can be quite uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that need altering." --Doctor Who

No matter how feverishly we present ideas here, no matter how strongly we seem to argue them, understand that they are at best only working hypotheses.

They could well be wrong -- and if they are, we will abandon them for something better.

That's why we want your feedback. The COMMUNITY section is designed to make it easy for you. Please take a skeptical approach to the arguments we make. Expose their flaws. Question. Criticize.

At the same time, make an honest effort to understand what you are about to criticize. Many of our working hypotheses will be presented under the ATHEOLOGY heading, and as that word implies, atheism is one of our most significant hypotheses.

You'll find useful background reasoning and additional hypotheses presented by URSA MAJOR and ELTANIN in their respective areas.

Finally, don't expect consistency, either of ideas or word usage. Though we think our working hypotheses generally mesh -- more or less -- there are certainly questions and inconsistencies which should be examined. Please help us address them.

One last note. Not everything in this site is presented in the language of analytical statements. There is an important reason for that. We believe there is a legitimate -- indeed, essential -- place in human life for evocative and poetic language -- which is itself another one of our hypotheses.
